Scientific and Statistical Database Management: unibz Team Awarded

Matteo Ceccarello, Anton Dignös, Johann Gamper, and Christina Khnaisser won the best research paper award at the 35th International Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management, which took place in Los Angeles, California, USA.

In the work titled “Indexing Temporal Relations for Range-Duration Queries”, the authors study indexing techniques and algorithms to efficiently access interval data, such as tourist stays, antibiotics prescriptions, or aviation data, based on their times and durations, allowing domain experts to quickly run analyses and extract insights from the data.

This awarded work arose from a collaboration between Matteo Ceccarello, a previous researcher at unibz and now at the University of Padova, researcher Anton Dignös, and Prof. Johann Gamper from unibz, and Christina Khnaisser, a researcher from Université de Sherbrooke in Canada and a former visiting researcher at unibz. It was supported by a grant from the Autonomous Province of Bozen-Bolzano under the research call “Research Südtirol/Alto Adige 2019”. This is the second best paper award in the context of this research project.

The “35th International Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database Management” took place at the Information Sciences Institute of the University of Southern California, with invited speakers from Rutgers University on data resources in structural biology, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on digital data preservation, and from NASA on AI and machine learning in Mars exploration.
