Undertaking the ERC adventure

Are you a talented scientist who has produced excellent research work? So, the ERC grants could be for you. A seminar inside unibz shows how to undertake the ERC adventure.

Organised by prof. Barbara Russo, vice dean for research at the Faculty of Computer Science, two professors of the University of Lugano, Gabriele Bavota and Paolo Tonella, will illustrate their walk-through in obtaining an ERC grant.

Gabriele Bavota was previously a researcher in Software Engineering at the unibz Faculty of Computer Science. Paolo Tonella was a senior researcher at the Fondazione Bruno Kessler and collaborated with the Faculty of Computer Science in Bozen-Bolzano for many years.

In their talk, they will focus on practical issues as how to built a suitable curriculum vitae, how to successfully write and defended a ERC proposal as well as how to manage as a consequence the ERC grant. At the end of each talk there will be 15 minutes of a plenary Q&A session.

Program on Friday, 10th December (room E220):

14:30 - 15:45 Gabriele Bavota "Undertaking the ERC adventure: Starting Grant"
15:45 - 16:45 Paolo Tonella "Undertaking the ERC adventure: Advanced Grant
16:45-17:45 Individual meetings with the speakers (by appointment)

Short bios of the speakers:
Gabriele Bavota is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Informatics of the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), Lugano, where he is part of the Software Institute, leading the SEART research group. He received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Salerno, Italy, in 2013. His research interests include software maintenance and evolution, code quality, mining software repositories, and empirical software engineering. On these topics, he authored over 150 papers published in international journals and conferences and has received four ACM Sigsoft Distinguished Paper awards at the three top software engineering conferences: ASE 2013 and 2017, ESEC-FSE 2015, and ICSE 2015. He also received the best/distinguished paper award at SCAM 2012, ICSME 2018, MSR 2019, and ICPC 2020. He is the recipient of the 2018 ACM Sigsoft Early Career Researcher Award for outstanding contributions in software engineering as an early career investigator and the principal investigator of the DEVINTA ERC project. More information:

Paolo Tonella is Full Professor at the Faculty of Informatics and at the Software Institute of the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) in Lugano, Switzerland. He is a Honorary Professor at University College London, UK and Affiliated Fellow of the Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Trento, Italy, where he has been Head of Software Engineering until mid-2018. Paolo Tonella holds an ERC Advanced grant as Principal Investigator of the project PRECRIME. The professor wrote over 150 peer reviewed conference papers and over 50 journal papers. His h-index (according to Google scholar) is 59. He is/was in the editorial board of the ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology, of the IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, of Empirical Software Engineering, Springer, and of the Journal of Software: Evolution and Process, Wiley. His current research interests are in the field of software testing, in particular approaches to ensure the dependability of machine learning based systems, automated testing of cyber physical systems, and test oracle inference and improvement.
